![]() It’s followed at 9pm by the final episode of A Spy Among Friends: when Philby (Guy Pearce) wakes up in hospital, he finds that the letter he had written to fellow agent Nicholas Elliott (Damian Lewis) has disappeared. This companion documentary to ITV’s slick dramatisation is narrated by Endeavour’s Roger Allam and contains a mix of archival footage, clippings and interviews with author Ben Macintyre and former KGB colonel Mikhail Lyubimov, among others, to tell the story. Great, then, was the horror when he was revealed to be a Russian double agent (as part of the Cambridge Five) in 1963, having shared scores of classified information with the Kremlin. ![]() ![]() Educated at Westminster and Cambridge, Philby quickly rose through the ranks to become one of MI6’s most senior officers. It’s hard to overstate the shockwaves that Kim Philby’s exposure as a Soviet spy caused in British society in the Sixties.
